Project: Analysis of Very Narrowband Requirements for Hydrologic Frequencies

This project examined the implications for the hydrologic warning system (HWS) community of a future Federal requirement that hydrologic warnings systems employ 6.25 kHz efficient technology. This requirement will require systems to use radios that operate with a maximum bandwidth of 6.25 kHz, or to provide equivalent efficiency. This requirement is also called very narrowband operation.

This project included the following activities

  • Review the status of the FCC's current narrowband (12.5 kHz channel) requirement
  • Examine the FCC's plans for a future very narrowband (6.25 kHz channel) requirement
  • Assess the current state of and the prospects for standards for VHF and UHF data radios
  • Review the National Hydrologic Warning Council (NHWC) ALERT2 protocol specifications, particularly with respect to a future very narrowband requirement
  • Evaluate two commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) data radios that may be applicable to hydrologic warning systems
