Project: Analysis of Very Narrowband Requirements for Hydrologic Frequencies

This project examined the implications for the hydrologic warning system (HWS) community of a future Federal requirement that hydrologic warnings systems employ 6.25 kHz efficient technology. This requirement will require systems to use radios that operate with a maximum bandwidth of 6.25 kHz, or to provide equivalent efficiency. This requirement is also called very narrowband operation.

This project included the following activities

  • Review the status of the FCC's current narrowband (12.5 kHz channel) requirement
  • Examine the FCC's plans for a future very narrowband (6.25 kHz channel) requirement
  • Assess the current state of and the prospects for standards for VHF and UHF data radios
  • Review the National Hydrologic Warning Council (NHWC) ALERT2 protocol specifications, particularly with respect to a future very narrowband requirement
  • Evaluate two commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) data radios that may be applicable to hydrologic warning systems

The Analysis of Very Narrowband Requirements for Hydrologic Frequencies project was funded by the Department of Commerce under a contract that was effective October 1, 2010 – September 30, 2011. Any opinions, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this web page and these publications are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Department of Commerce.
